Domestic violence is a crime that affects citizens in Grundy County and can have a ripple effect on our great community. Domestic violence is violent, aggressive, and/or manipulative behavior that occurs between an intimate partner or family member against another. Domestic violence can have long lasting physical and mental effects on its victims. Approximately 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner or family member in the United States – this adds up to more than 10 million men and women per year. Domestic violence numbers are rising in Grundy County, and domestic violence prevention is very important for our community.
The primary purpose of Breaking Away, Inc. is to provide emergency services to families that are affected by domestic violence in Grundy County. The main service that we provide is temporary housing for domestic violence victims. We consider clients for our services when a police report is made by a victim of current or past domestic violence.
Breaking Away, Inc. also works with several other local agencies to link victims of domestic violence to social services depending on their needs. We are willing to help individuals in crisis who could benefit from support, advocacy, counseling, and the building of self-esteem.
We are the only domestic violence shelter located in Grundy County.
Breaking Away, Inc. offers services to numerous Grundy County families every year. The targeted population is men, women, and children involved in domestic violence on an emergency basis.
We look forward to helping domestic violence victims get to a safe space and break the cycle of domestic violence.
Our Mission
CASA of River Valley’s mission is to draw from community resources to reduce the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social impacts of abuse and neglect experienced by children in foster care in the Will and Grundy Counties. We do this by recruiting and training volunteers to act as the voice of the child, provide needed information to the court, and work toward a more restorative juvenile court process.
Who We Are
The Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program originated in Seattle, Wash., in 1977 by Judge David Soukup, the presiding judge of King County Superior Court. He was troubled by the small amount of time and information he was given to make decisions destined to change the lives of children who have experienced abuse and neglect. CASA serves as the only organization in the community that trains volunteers to be Guardians ad Litem. The court appoints these volunteers to speak on behalf of the child’s best interest, with the goal to “Change a Child’s Story.™”
In Will and Grundy Counties, hundreds of children enter the Juvenile Justice Systems every year due to abuse and neglect. CASA of River Valley helps these children recover from the traumas they’ve endured and find safe, permanent, loving homes where they can prosper. They stay with each child until his/her case is closed and the child is placed into a safe, permanent home with hope for a positive future.
Since 1994, CASA has served over 3,000 children. Currently CASA is able to serve 79% of children in foster care. With your help, we can reach our goal of serving 100% of the abused and neglected children in need of a CASA volunteer.

Whatever their background, every child entering the court system needs representation.
We devote countless hours to making a profound impact on these children, leading to many positive stories of reuniting with family members or finding their way out of abusive homes. In cooperation with our volunteers, partners and the community, CASA of River Valley also achieves the following results for our children:
- More than 300 children in Will and Grundy Counties receive representation from a CASA each year
- Children with a CASA volunteer spend an average of eight months fewer in foster care than those without representation
- The children we serve are also less likely to re-enter the foster care system

The Community Foundation of Grundy County improves and maintains the quality of life in Grundy County through leadership and philanthropy, specifically by stewarding donor-designed funds, awarding grants to nonprofits, and convening stakeholder networks.
CNN-Meals on Wheels addresses hunger among seniors residing in Grundy County, whether through home-delivered meals or congregate meals at various restaurants around Grundy County.
The PADS sheltering program is designed to offer a safe and welcoming place for people to be able to sleep through the coldest months of the year. It is open to adults and families who are in need. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for those affected by homelessness and hunger in the Grundy Area. Please join us in providing that smile & kind word to your neighbor.
The Mission of the Grundy County Historical Society is to provide a permanent location to house, preserve, and display objects pertaining to the county’s past including items of a cultural, social, geological, and anthropological nature.
The Historical Society was organized in 1923. The initial collection was displayed in a few handmade cases in the basement of the Grundy County Courthouse. Eventually in 2001, the Society rented a storefront on Liberty Street in Morris.
Then, in 2008, space was purchased in the historic Coleman Hardware Building and our Museum was fully realized. After 84 years, the collection finally had a permanent home. In 2018 we added an additional 5,000 square feet for display, storage and research purposes. We offer private tours of the museum and the Caboose with 24 hours notice. In addition the Museum has a meeting room which can comfortably seat up to 10 people around a conference table or 30 people in auditorium seating for use before or after a tour.
The Grundy County Housing Authority is an independent, non-taxing Illinois Municipal Corporation chartered pursuant to the Illinois Housing Authorities Act. Our mission is to provide safe, decent, and affordable living opportunities for all program qualified residents of Grundy County, Illinois.
Working in partnership with the United States Department of Urban Development, the Illinois Housing Development Authority, private investors and donors, our homes are a safe haven for some of Grundy County's most vulnerable residents.
The Grundy County Veterans Assistance Commission (GCVAC) is an independent county commission that is operated by and for veterans for the purpose of promoting the welfare of honorably discharged veterans of military service and their families; to act as a central service office for all veteran organizations and to assist with all VA claims work referred to the commission by member organizations and the community; and to have general oversight of the distribution of all relief and supplies that may be appropriated for the benefit of military veterans and their families.

Mental illnesses are brain disorders that are biologically based medical problems. Untreated, they can cause severe disturbances in thinking, feeling and relating. This results in substantially diminished capacity for dealing with the ordinary demands of life. Mental illness can affect persons of any age and occur in any family. They are not caused by bad parenting and not evidence of weakness of character.

We support, educate, & advocate with members of the LGBTQ+ community, their families, and friends. We meet the 2nd Sunday of each month at 4pm at the Morris Municipal Services Facility,
